Overview

Eventure is a B2C app I created that lists events near a user and incorporates features to connect with friends. With its intuitive interface and location-based technology, Eventure makes it effortless to uncover the best events around you, from concerts and festivals to workshops and art exhibitions.

Eventure goes beyond merely finding events—it’s designed to bring people together through shared experiences.

Problem

Finding fun events to attend in town or when visiting a new city shouldn’t be difficult. People should be able to look up events tailored to their likes and location. Unfortunately, established apps such as Ticketmaster and Eventbrite lack many things that people claim to be fundamental within an event-finder app. Things like: transparent pricing, a sense of community, and tricky navigation are all common issues that users pointed out.

I want to solve the issues plaguing most other apps available on the market. Making these changes and still providing a solution that is easy to navigate and use is my end goal.

Solution

I wanted to create something easy to use, intuitive, and sleek. That’s where Eventure comes in, an app that solves the problem of finding something to do.

Eventure provides intuitive navigation, an easy-to-use interface, and transparent pricing. Additional features like seeing what your friends are doing, venue ratings, and ticket availability offer users the complete package in an event-finder app.

01. Discovery

01.01 Secondary Research

Through my secondary research, I realized that people make most decisions based on emotions. When it comes to live events, many people attend concerts to support an act and connect with themselves and shape their identity. Live events of all kinds improve an individual’s psychological well-being and give a sense of community.

In this post-pandemic world where many of us have had to endure isolation, now more than ever, people crave connection. The problem is the communication of live events has become a challenge to most event organizers. Many event organizers have problems selling tickets and informing the public of the events they are hosting. In addition, event-goers complain about the price gauging many event apps take part in, cheating the customer. To top it off, many eventgoers are wary of the fact that many live events that host large amounts of people bring a lot of health risks with them.

01.02 Screener Surveys

After my secondary research, I wanted to recruit interviewees to learn more about how they feel when finding events and the ticket-purchasing process. I screened for individuals who attend events regularly, between the ages of 20 and 45, and purchased tickets through apps. I turned to colleagues and social media, put out a screener survey, and received 12 pieces of great feedback.

01.03 Interviews

During the project’s discovery phase, I conducted interviews to build new personas and inform the design. The personas derived from these interviews would allow me to put myself in a potential user’s shoes and make more informed design decisions. I prepared an interview script with 19 open-ended questions, focusing on my target audience’s values, motivations, and daily routines. In 7 days, I recruited and interviewed five users remotely. Here is what I wanted to find out:

I wanted to know what people do with their free time.
It was essential to find out how people went about finding events(apps they used, methods of learning about events)
I wanted to know what services people used and what issues they had with those services.
I wanted to know what users would add or subtract from existing services to make for a better experience.

The top takeaways from the interviews were:

Pricing always changes.
People want a sense of community(being able to see what others are doing and being able to connect with others with similar likes).
People enjoy easy access to tickets(QR codes, scannable barcodes)

01.04 Affinity Maps

I generated 55 sticky notes based on the notes taken from the interviews.

The notes I derived from the interviews helped me hone in on users’ thoughts about specific topics surrounding event-finding apps.

I found out about users’ “ideal live event,” the services they used to purchase tickets, and how they found events.

01.05 Empathy Maps

I was able to identify two unique types of users:

Tony and Cindy.

I derived these unique types of users from the affinity maps done before this. I took each participant’s answers to my questions and began grouping them within the maps below.

01.06 Personas

I wanted to understand better our users’ goals, needs, experiences, and behaviors. So, I created two personas for each of our user segments. They are based on the user interviews and surveys I had conducted previously; they were updated throughout the project as I gathered more data. I used these personas whenever I wanted to step out of myself and reconsider my initial ideas.

The personas were a big part of the design process, as everything I built was based on the information provided by these personas.
I reflected on these personas at almost every stage; they helped me tailor an app to the end user.

01.07 HMW’s

Writing HMW statements was straightforward. The research done beforehand made it easy to synthesize these statements. The goal was to determine which problems were of priority to alleviate any pain points.

How might we make it easier for users to find events in their vicinity?
How might we inform users of venue quality and safety?
How might we circumvent price hikes within our solution?
How might we allow users to connect with others attending similar events?
How might we deliver more transparent, straightforward event information for the end user?

02. Ideation

02.01 Brainstorm

All the research and synthesis provided me with enough insights to start sketching to generate ideas and establishing concepts that tackle users’ problems.

02.02 User Stories

User stories allowed me to begin to mold a mental model of what the project was about. In addition, user stories helped me empathize with the target groups, which allowed me to start working on the Minimum Viable Product by sorting accounts from highest to lowest priority to create values for users.

High Priority

As an avid app user, I would like to create an account within the app where I can link my other socials to connect to other event-goers.

As a user, I want to get complete pricing from the jump instead of realizing at the end that the cost is out of my price range.

As an avid event-goer, I would like to access a “score” that informs me on the overall quality of the event (venue, sound, safety).

Mid-Priority

As a user, I would like any purchases made to provide a QR code for easy event admission.

As a user, I want to see a venue’s layout and where things like bathrooms and bars are situated.

02.03 Sitemap

The Sitemap gave me an overview, a bird’s eye view of how my application would be laid out.

02.04 User Flows

Building off of my sitemaps, I then chose three user flows based on the most common functions within the app.

The three flows I focused on were:

Buying tickets to an event.
Connecting Socials to an Account.
Marking an event/artist as a favorite.

Making the user flows allowed me to imagine what a typical user might go through when using the app. In addition, being able to map out screens, actions, and decisions gave me an overview of the functionality of my app.

02.05 Sketches

Sketching out the user flows was fun and provided a realistic preliminary view of how the app would look. This activity made me start ideating how the app would function from screen to screen and how the user might interact with it.

02.06 Low-Fidelity Wireframes

Using Figma, I translated my first sketches into low-fidelity wireframes. Then, I improved them by adding a few relevant images. Finally, based on five tests, I’ve made a few alternations and moved on to creating high-fidelity prototypes.

I created low, mid, and high-fidelity wireframes for this project.
I used Concepts and Figma for my wireframes.
I conducted tests with my high-fidelity wireframes and found relevant issues that needed fixing.
I made two iterations for each fidelity.

03. Design

03.01 Brand Platform

Building a brand platform was an essential part of my design process as it allowed me to synthesize everything I had learned up to this point and build on it. In addition, building a brand platform helped me reflect on my brand identity, learn what makes it unique, and learn how to develop strong ties with potential users.

brand attributes

Trustworthy, accessible, transparent, attractive, concise

Eventure is not your typical event-finding app. Complete pricing from the jump makes it trustworthy. The navigation is intuitive and accessible. All event information is verified, transparent, and contained within an app that is sleek and attractive. Eventure was designed to look great, work great, and allow you to find events, get tickets and inform you of all events around you.

03.02 Mood-Board

Hand in hand with my brand platform, I wanted to create a mood board that embodied what eventure stood for.

I included pictures of various events and the color scheme the app would use in its layout.

Eventure is a one-stop solution for finding all kinds of events which is why I included pictures of various events and some design layouts.

03.03 Style Guide

The logo was the first thing I designed, and from there, I began working on the color schemes, buttons, and navigation. The style guide was essential for me and my design process; creating a guide for my app design was helpful and allowed me to create a cohesive and comprehensive experience for end users.

Laying out the text structures, primary and secondary colors, and the icons I could use within the design made it so that I could easily reference my options.

03.04 High-Fidelity Wireframe

When it came to Hi-Fi screens, my main goal was to create an interface that was simple, intuitive, and visually elegant. In addition, I ensured the navigation was straightforward and that all elements within the app were placed with a purpose.

04. Testing

04.01 Prototype

I used Figma to build a prototype of my main user flows. I made the necessary adjustments through several iterations to get closer to what I envisioned.

04.02 Usability Test

I created a fully-functional, high-fidelity prototype of the new flows using Figma. At the same time, I started recruiting subjects for the test who fit the criteria. I wanted to learn how users navigated the app and discover any issues they had when testing it. I did two usability tests in the first round and three after fixing the problems we identified. The following are the tasks participants were asked to complete :

Task 1: Buy tickets to the Daft Punk show at the Forum.

Task 2: Connect your Instagram account to your profile.

Task 3: Mark Phoenix as a favorite artist.

04.03 Test Results

I conducted usability testing to uncover any usability issues or mismatches of expectations of the application’s functionality. Five participants were tested using a prototype over Zoom and asked to complete three tasks. The main findings are below:

issue 1 - high priority

Users commented there should be an option to use Paypal and Apple pay as a method of payment. When checking out within the app, users noted there was no PayPal/Apple Pay option.

issue 2 - high priority

Lack of cost detail. One participant noted that the payment confirmation screen lacked a full rundown of the fees incorporated into the final costs.

04.04 Synthesize and Redesign

Additional Payment Methods

I went back into the payment screens and added additional payment options—mainly Paypal and Apple Pay per the requests of various users.

After implementing this, participants said they would be more likely to use the app over other event finder apps just because of their variety of choices regarding payment.

Excruciating Detail

All users stated one of the main issues they had with all other ticket-purchasing apps was the price variations. While transparent pricing was one of the focuses of this app, users stated they wanted “excruciating” detail.

I went back and made sure both the purchase and confirmation screens had a list of all fees included in the purchase. All costs like ticket prices, taxes, venue fees, etc., are now visible for users.

issue 2 fix - excruciating detail

In this example, I added the excruciating detail into the confirmation summary of the order.

05. Reflection

05.01 Looking back

I loved this project because it allowed me to express my creativity and because I was able to build an app that my friends and I would use; this wasn’t the first time I tried my hand at designing. Still, this project expanded my abilities in both the research and UI design department. I’ll be honest, coming in, I thought I knew way more about design than I did, so I was pleasantly humbled; since embarking on this project, I have learned so many more techniques and have been given excellent tips by all the design mentors along the way.

05.02 Looking ahead

The most important thing I took away from this course was realizing that I love design and enjoy what UX/UI is all about. There are a few more features I would have loved to made it into the app.

An integrated venue feature, where one could see a 2D overview of the inside of a venue; This way, people could quickly figure out where things like concessions, bathrooms, and even exits, are located.
A pay-for-access feature that would allow users to access a discord-like chat connected to that particular event. People could connect here or get updates about anything surrounding the artist or event.

These are features that, with more time, I would try out and test with users. I will keep expanding my knowledge in this field and hopefully work on some projects that other people find helpful in their lives!
